Bring life, color, and structure to your property. We design planting schemes that combine visual beauty with the practical demands of Island soils, winds, salt spray, and deer pressure.
Planting design on Martha's Vineyard maps the property's sun, wind, soil, and wet zones, then composes plantings that look natural, support local pollinators, and survive coastal conditions. Infinity Landscaping favors native and salt-tolerant species, plans for deer pressure, and uses a balanced palette of evergreens, deciduous ornamentals, perennials, and groundcovers across all six island towns.
Landscape Design
What this page covers
Ecological planting design
We design plantings that harmonize with the Vineyard's natural landscape. By mapping sun exposure, wind directions, soil textures, and wet zones, we build gardens that look natural, support local pollinators, and survive seasonal shifts.
Foundation planting plans
We replace overgrown, dated foundation plantings with modern designs. We specify low-maintenance evergreens, compact flowering shrubs, and structural perennials that complement your home's architecture without blocking paths or windows.
Native species prioritization
Native plants are the backbone of a healthy landscape. We source and plant native Vineyard species like switchgrass, highbush blueberry, winterberry, and red maple that are adapted to local soils, requiring less water and fertilizer.
Plant specimen sourcing
We source healthy, acclimated plants from trusted regional growers. From mature shade trees to select perennials and groundcovers, we inspect every root ball and plant canopy to ensure they are free of pests and ready to thrive.
Landscape Design
Designing plantings that survive Island conditions
Planting design on Martha's Vineyard requires deep horticultural expertise. A plant that thrives on the mainland can easily fail here due to sandy soil, strong salt winds off the water, and heavy winter deer grazing.
We evaluate every project's microclimate before choosing a single species. On exposed waterfront sites in Chilmark or Aquinnah, we specify heavy-duty salt-tolerant evergreens and wind-diffusing grasses. In historic village settings in Edgartown, we design cottage-style borders featuring hydrangeas, lavender, and structured boxwoods. Our goal is to build gardens that grow more beautiful year after year, with care requirements that match your lifestyle and budget.

Frequently asked questions
Native plants have spent thousands of years adapting to the Island's sandy soils, wind, and dry summers. They feature deep root systems that hold soil, require minimal watering once established, and do not need synthetic fertilizers or chemical pesticides, helping protect the Island's groundwater.
Deer are a major landscape challenge on the Island. We focus our designs on species that deer find unpalatable due to strong scents, fuzzy leaf textures, or bitter tastes. For high-risk areas, we can also install physical barriers (like deer fencing) or set up seasonal organic repellent spray treatments.
For structural evergreens and privacy hedges, we recommend starting with larger specimen sizes (6 to 8+ feet) for immediate impact. For perennial beds and groundcovers, smaller sizes (1-gallon or quart pots) are often better, as they establish their root systems more quickly in the native soil and catch up to larger plants within one to two seasons.
Waterfront zones are subject to strict regulations by local Conservation Commissions. We design compliant planting plans that feature native, non-invasive species, helping restore coastal banks, stabilize sand dunes, and protect sensitive wetlands while enhancing your views.
